Precise measurement results ensure the performance of the new FAW V8 engine generation.

From concept to power package

The automotive sector never stands still — and with it, the demand for cutting-edge engine technologies is growing. FAW, one of China's largest automotive manufacturers, has taken on this challenge and created something extraordinary: China's first V8 engine with direct injection and supercharging. The V8TD engine powers the luxury Red Flag L5 and LS5 models — with a peak output of 485 kW and a torque of 850 Nm.

But it was a long way to get there. FAW's New Energy Powertrain Division was faced with a crucial question during development: How can absolute precision be ensured with such complex structures? Because with a high-performance motor like the V8TD, every hundredth of a millimeter is decisive.

Trust in WENZEL

In order to ensure the highest level of quality and dimensional accuracy of the motor components, FAW opted for WENZEL measurement technology. The WENZEL LH 1210 coordinate measuring machine was used — a system that stands for stability, accuracy and easy operation.

“We tested various systems — but the WENZEL LH 1210 KMG impressed us with its precision, reliability and service,” says Duan Weiping, shift manager in the FAW measurement room.
“We need absolute repeatability, especially when it comes to the delicate components of the V8 engine — and WENZEL achieves this impressively consistently. ”

The secret of the LH series's success lies in its robust granite construction, combined with integrated air bearing guides and high-precision guide surfaces. These ensure excellent long-term stability and thermal insensitivity — two decisive factors when it comes to micrometer precision. High-resolution standards and cutting-edge sensor technology enable precise measurement results even with complex geometries and free-form surfaces.

More efficiency, less effort

In everyday life, it quickly becomes apparent that precision saves time. FAW used to have to test the cylinder block, head and crankshaft on three different measuring machines. Today, a single WENZEL coordinate measuring machine can do this — faster, more precisely and in one go.

“This has made our work much easier and significantly accelerated the development of the V8 engine,” says Duan.


Close cooperation with the WENZEL service team was decisive. Training and on-site technical support ensured that FAW was able to fully exploit the potential of the measurement system. The result: higher productivity, more reliable data and a clear leap in quality in engine development.
